Visiting Scholars Program
The Visiting Scholar Program is a funded program for fourth year medical students interested in Emergency Medicine. The program is designed to support students, who may not otherwise be able to travel to our area, and to provide an opportunity to gain clinical exposure to Emergency Medicine at two NYC-based tertiary medical centers. This sub-internship will take place for one month during the months of July through October. The deadline to apply is typically the third week of April each cycle.

The program is open to all fourth-year medical students interested in Emergency Medicine who can meet the academic requirements of NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine.
Applicants will be considered on an individual basis with special consideration given to those applicants who
(i) were the first in their family to attend graduate school;
(ii) grew up in a single parent household;
(iii) have, either as a result of their socio-economic background, or other challenging life experiences, overcome obstacles on their journey to medical school;
(iv) have lived or worked in a diverse environment;
and/or(v) have, through their education or work experience, demonstrated a commitment to serving historically underprivileged populations.

Our Department of Emergency Medicine uses a Pre-Application Process in order to offer and hold a spot ahead of the VSAS opening. Please note that, if accepted, this is a conditional acceptance, and all applications must be submitted through VSAS for final institutional approval.

A current copy of your curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation, and current medical school transcript.

Students will function in the role of an Emergency Medicine intern and will have 1:1 on-shift teaching with a faculty member. Students will be required to attend all simulation, teaching, and conferences with the housestaff, and mentoring opportunities will be included.

Recipients of the VSP Scholarship will receive:
Columbia or Cornell University housing
$2500 travel stipend
One-on-one mentorship
